Neil Simons’ 1997 play Proposals deals with the intentions and alignments of nine separate hearts. There is Burt Hines, a workaholic, now ill, who realizes too late that he lost the love of his life, Annie, now married and living in Paris. Josie, Burt’s daughter, is breaking her engagement with Ken to pursue Ken’s best friend, Ray. Ray is enjoying the company of a vacant bombshell, Sammii; and Vinnie, a Soprano-style mobster from Miami, comes to the mountains to court Josie. Set in the early 1960’s, Proposals has as its narrator, Clemma Diggins, the all-knowing domestic who has seen it all. And her past love Lewis comes back, now handicapped and a little wiser for his 7 year absence. This play represents Simon’s crisp dialogue and crackling humor that audiences have seen in the best of his earlier writings.
